Celebrating the 204th Anniversary of the Archaeological Museum in Split

The Archaeological Museum in Split, the oldest museum institution in Croatia and Southeast Europe, proudly marks its 204th anniversary on August 22, 2024. Throughout more than two centuries of rich history, our museum has remained a vital cultural institution, tirelessly working to preserve, research, and promote the cultural and historical heritage of our region. This year, we have prepared exciting activities and are offering free admission all day to honor our visitors and invite them to celebrate this significant occasion with us.

"Little Legionnaires" Workshop for Children (in Croatian) (9:00 AM)
Our youngest visitors, aged 8 to 11, will have the opportunity to participate in the "Little Legionnaires - Life of a Roman Soldier" workshop, starting at 9:00 AM. Through play and interactive activities, children will learn about the daily life and skills of the brave Roman legionnaires who shaped the history of Dalmatia. The workshop includes a recreation of military formations and a tour of the museum's collection of Roman monuments. Due to limited space, we recommend that parents secure their child's participation by registering via the form available HERE.

Guided Tour in English (11:00 AM)
For our international visitors, we have organized a guided tour in English starting at 11:00 AM. As they walk through the lapidarium, visitors will have the chance to explore our cultural and historical heritage through stories revealed by the stone monuments. The tour will also touch on Roman birthday customs, allowing visitors to gain a deeper understanding of the cultural practices of ancient Dalmatia and the Roman world in general.

Guided Tour in Croatian (6:00 PM)
The celebration will conclude with a guided tour in Croatian, beginning at 6:00 PM. During this tour of the lapidarium and the fascinating "Memento Mori" exhibition, we will also touch the rituals and customs that the Romans practiced in honor of their birthdays, known as "Dies natalis." Together, we will investigate whether traces of these customs can be found in the monuments preserved by this oldest museum institution in this part of Europe.

All-Day Free Admission
Throughout the entire day, visitors will enjoy free admission to the museum, making this day the perfect opportunity for all generations to join the celebration, escape the summer heat, and discover the rich history housed in one of the most beautiful spaces in our city.

We invite all citizens of Split, the surrounding areas, and visitors from around the world to join us in celebrating this important anniversary. Come to Zrinsko-Frankopanska 25, discover the wonders of our museum, and celebrate with us 204 years of dedication to preserving cultural heritage.

See you at the Archaeological Museum in Split!
