Permanent Display

The permanent display of the Archaeological Museum in Split, installed in the front yard, veranda, atrium, corridor and exhibition halls, presents the past of Illyricum and Dalmatia as reflected in material remains.

The allure of archaeology is the awareness of origin and deep historical roots, and the Archaeological Museum in Split preserves the materials that present our past where it transpired: indeed, our collections were not gathered just anywhere in the world, nor do they focus on the mercantile, colonial or tourism aspects of the past, but rather the authentic history that flows through our veins.

The lapidarium displays stone monuments from the Greek, Roman and medieval periods, as well as some early modern pieces in the courtyard, the portico adjacent to it, the atrium and the corridor. Prehistoric materials can be seen in the small exhibition hall, while materials from the ancient Greek to the medieval period are displayed in the large hall. The materials are presented chronologically and thematically.
